Fenced In

Looks like work is set to begin on the Mill River resotration as fences started going up around North end of park on both the East and the West sides of the river. Removal of the dam and creation natural river slope with plantings is the second major step in creation of the Mill River greenway after the creation of the playground downstream.

Not that Kind of Shuffle Board

Today is the last day to sign up for Bar Sports League. The crowd is considerably younger to the gals on the left. The event runs for 4 weeks every Thursday starting around 6:30 at Seaside Tavern in Stamford, although the league is flexible about letting you make up games, coming a little late, etc. My team had an epic crumble in the finals last year, mostly all my partners fault. If you enjoy loosing to me in some combination of darts, pool, or shuffleboard contact morgan@barsportsleague.org today to join.

Wapping Off

I noticed The Stamford Advocate rolled out a wap page that makes accessing their site from a mobile device more managable. Good news for keeping up with the recently increasingly weird CTW from the road.

Replacing the UConn Garage

The Advocate reports there is a push underway to encourage UConn Stamford to replace their crumbling parking garage on the banks of the Mill River with some mixed used dorm/ classroom/ retail development. The property is certainly underutilized in its current form and both the city and the school could seriously stand to gain by rethinking its use.

A higher education presence is a major asset to any downtown, injecting some round the clock vitality and generating a pool of educated talent local businesses can tap. Any opportunity to further leverage those benefits with added investment in the Stamford campus should be a goal for the city.

As RBS demonstrates, redevelopment along the river also provides an opportunity to add to the greenway & trails slowly beginning to take shape along the Mill River.

It would also be a wise investment for UConn to continue develop a satellite campus in an area where businesses outnumber cow pies. A building that combines dorm and classroom space above a garage/ retail component sounds like the right step.

A true housing solution for the student body may also alleviate one of Stamford’s pressing social ills, too many dicks on the dance floor.

Roll Another Doocy

Fox News gets some turf burn courtesy of Danny Boy Malloy and the City That Works:

Stick to telling the weather Steve Doocy. I thought Malloy had a strong performance and controlled the framework of the debate. Legitimate investment in local infrastructure, whether in transportation, energy, schools, even civic & recreational projects that raise the quality of life are often shouted out of the debate with cries of pork.

Thanks to Joey K & Stamford, the place that works? for the heads up!

Stimulating Stamford

Check it: Stamford’s list of “shovel ready” projects recommended by the US Conference of Mayors as potential projects for Obama’s stimulus package.

Most expensive? 54MM for phase 2 of the Urban Transitway.

Biggest jobs generator? Progress St Apartments at 230. (creation of low Income Housing in the West Side if I’m not mistaken)

I’m in favor of the stimulus – however I think it’s somewhat of a wasted opportunity if it doesn't shoot higher – a national energy grid, alt energy, interstate high speed rail, something to stab at our larger national issues while also creating jobs. The argument is those projects would probably take time to implement, and jobs would bleed as shovels remained clean. So if it’s going to go forward regardless we might as well get a taste especially considering our normal rate of return. For every $ 1 Connecticut pays in federal tax we see $0.61 back, the third worst return rate of all 50 states. Remember that next time some southern Republican Senator is on CSPAN shaking one fist at a “welfare state” while pocketing double their rate of return of federal taxes with the other hand. Combine that with accusations that Governor Rell is directing less state aid towards the cities in recent years. Bridgeport isn't being shy with their requests. What on the list should we hold out for? What's missing?

Dot Comedy

Finally a solution to all you social networkers who can’t find an outlet to vent your frustration with Westhill & Trinity Catholic’s machinations about town while conversely expressing pride in Stamford High School and their proficiency in executing a number of managerial duties within city jurisdiction – the “FUCK WESTHILL & TCHS STAMFORD HIGH RUNS SHIT IN STAMFORD” Facebook Group!

First Look at New YMCA

Scaffolding went up on the Washington Blvd YMCA as continuation of the partial hotel conversion/ club spruce up project. This is first image of the planned refurbished outside I've seen. (and most likely you too).

That's the best size I can do. Thanks to Footnotes - All the News That Foot Can Print for the image.

Certainly a marked improvement from it's current outward appearance.

Computer Newspapers?! What's next? A Black President?

As the future or printed newspapers seems to be in serious question, let's all climb into The Way Back Machine for a quant look back at newsprint's obliviousness to their impending doom!

Weekly Round Up Links

A group of NYU students are working on a project to improve recycling in Stamford. Please take a minute to complete their survey.

Like your links a week old? Then check out a New York Times profile of the often rocky, sometimes lonely North Stamford.

Mill River restoration is set to start in March/ April, which means it should be underway by August. Why not just level the trees in the interim? If you let them bloom, you may have some crazy chained to them come spring.

Danny Boy is (maybe) taking it upstate.

And some observations (as pointed out by a anonymous commenter)

The hole is being filled in on the Ritz Carlton site. I'm taking this a another sign of further delay. A foundation would be going in that spot, not dirt, if it was truly ramping up.

Layla's Falafel is open downtown. Just like Gardening Catering they stay open past bar close. I made a stop there on Friday and I definately threw around "you know I have a website..." My dream of walking around town like Don Fanucci "just wetting my beak" remains unfullfilled.
