Wholdega

So I checked out the Fairway in Harlem yesterday, mostly as a scam to park for the Dinosaur BBQ across the street. Stamford’s is scheduled to open next year as part of the Harbor Point Yale & Towne development.

I would describe Fairway (at least this location) as “Whole Foods meets bodega”. Anyone else have more experience with Fairway care to share?

I think your description might be selling Fairway a little short. "A common man's Whole Foods" may be more apt. I used to shop a lot at the Red Hook location in Brooklyn. It wasn't a terribly well designed store (with a lot of overlapping merchandise in separate organic/kosher/regular sections of the store), but it was realistically priced. It's very similar to Trader Joe's, actually--only larger.

Definitely selling Fairway short. While a bit challenging to navigate (and I shopped there for months when I lived in Harlem) the selection was pretty great and the prices were excellent. It's one of the better grocery stores in Harlem, too bad it's all the way over on the West Side.

I have only been a couple of times, however, I was pretty impressed.

Just look around at what we have now in Stamford. Particularly the quality and breadth of produce, meats, fish, etc. It's pretty pathetic.

Oh yeah, and they roast coffee on site.

Personally, I can't wait for Fairway to open, even if its going to be a pain in the ass to get too.

I shopped at the Harlem store a lot when I lived down there, and really loved the selection and the customer service. You could go as high end or budget as you wanted to, and you could always get good advice from the people who worked there.
The store layout was a little cramped and confusing, but with this new construction, I don't think that will be an issue.
By the way, they have poured the foundation for the store.
I don't think it will be a pain in the ass to get to. The Urban Transitway is almost ready to open, Atlantic Street will be widened, and a lot of the South End will be easier to get to because of improvements that are required elements of all the development down there. Although I would prefer that they put it right downtown so I could walk there.

Fairway is really cool. More merchandise per SF than a Whole Foods, particularly in the produce department, which gives it that bodega/wholesale produce appearance that you often see in Queens.

Also, in the NYC markets they carry more mainstream products (like 2 massive aisles of potato chips), which you wouldn't find at a Whole Foods.
