RIP McCalls
One of Stamford’s iconic buildings, the old McCalls factory on the Mill River in the South End is beginning to be demolished. The posted demolition sign reads April 15th as the date. Yesterday I noticed parts of the top floor were already being blown out. Antares owns the site and the parcel is planned as part of the footprint for their Harbor Point Gateway development.
Being a historic building in such a unique space I’m shocked this was never converted into urban lofts or a cool industrial looking office space. Its sad to see it go, but Antares has said they will incorporate park land that will connect with the Mill River Greenway being created up and down the river. Better that than an abandoned building I suppose.

Way too mini-NYC for Stamford. Shame to see it go.
It also might have been too polluted and/or delapidated to be converted. Still a shame.
The McCalls building was actually gorgeous inside!!! How do I know? Well, because slumlord Joe Lieberman, who owned the factory building before it was sold to Antares a few months ago, completely failed to secure the building, so anyone could go inside and take a peek.
The views from the top floor, which would have made awesome loft condos, were spectacular. Straight out to Stamford Harbor, right on the water. Views in the other direction were not as nice because Lieberman had left the adjacent properties vacant for over a year, so they became total dumping grounds for squatters and dumpers. IT was a disgrace.
It's sad that the McCalls building couldn't have been preserved though --- all those years it sat empty, it could have been great housing for artists or others.
(Actually, it was housing for squatters for quite a while!)
Sad to see a Stamford landmark go down.
